Look, we know “backup software release” isn’t usually a sentence that gets pulses racing. It ranks somewhere between “quarterly compliance refresher” and “the printer needs new toner” on the excitement scale. But every now and then, a vendor drops an update that genuinely changes the maths for our MSP partners – and Arcserve ShadowProtect 8.0 (paired with ImageManager 8.1) is one of those.
So we’re doing what good distributors do: cutting through the marketing soup and telling you what actually matters for your NZ customers, your margins, and your weekends.
The headline, no fluff
Arcserve has just announced ShadowProtect 8.0 with host-based backup for Microsoft Hyper-V. If you’ve ever deployed a ShadowProtect agent on every single guest VM like a backyard sausage sizzle, handing out snags one by one – congratulations, you can now back up the whole barbecue at once.
Think of it like this: agent-based backup is door-to-door delivery. Host-based backup is the courier turning up with the whole street’s parcels on one truck. Same outcome, dramatically less faff.
What’s actually in the box
ShadowProtect 8.0 brings:
Host-based Hyper-V backup — agentless protection at the hypervisor level. Faster to deploy, less to maintain, fewer licences to count on your fingers
Agent-based backup still available for the workloads that need it — Microsoft SQL Server and Exchange, where you want application-level visibility and granular recovery. Best of both worlds, no religious wars required
Enhanced backup verification —proving your backups actually work before the customer rings you on a Sunday morning
OAuth 2.0 for SMTP — because passwords stuffed into mail relays in 2026 is, frankly, embarrassing
ImageManager 8.1 brings:
Deeper verification reporting (the auditor-pleasing kind)
A new history view so you stop digging through logs like an archaeologist
Exportable verification history + API support — gold for cyber insurance renewals, compliance reviews, and customer QBRs
Improved virtual boot testing and OS disk checks for agent-based backups
Unified visibility across both host-based and agent-based backup images
Why this matters for your NZ customers?
A few things are happening in the local market that make this release land at the right time:
Cyber insurance is no longer a tick-box exercise. Underwriters in NZ are asking pointed questions about recovery testing, immutability, and documented verification. “She’ll be right” doesn’t get a quote anymore. ImageManager 8.1’s exportable verification history is the kind of evidence that turns a tough renewal into a normal one.
Hybrid is the norm, not the exception. Most of our channel’s SMB and mid-market customers are running a mix of on-prem Hyper-V, some Azure, a sprinkle of Microsoft 365, and a server in a cupboard nobody wants to talk about. ShadowProtect 8.0 covers the Hyper-V piece more efficiently, and the wider Arcserve portfolio (SaaS Backup, Cloud Cyber Resilient Storage) picks up the rest.
MSPs are the new target. Ransomware crews have figured out that compromising one MSP gets them dozens of downstream customers. That makes verified, immutable, auditable recovery data non-negotiable — both for your customers and for your own delivery practice.
What this means for your margin and your ops
Three things, plainly:
1. Less deployment time per customer. Host-based means fewer agents, fewer reboots, fewer “why is this VM not backing up” tickets.
2. Stronger renewal conversations. Verification reporting + audit trails = you walk into the QBR with evidence, not vibes.
3. Easier upsell paths. Once ShadowProtect + ImageManager is in, the bridge to Cloud Cyber Resilient Storage and SaaS Backup for M365/Entra ID is short and well-paved.
The new MSP Zone partner portal
Arcserve has also relaunched its MSP partner portal with three things partners actually use: market-ready campaigns in a box, sales positioning + trial playbooks, and the full technical curriculum including the ShadowProtect Journey: From Fundamentals to Expertise certification. If you’ve got techs who need to skill up, or marketing who needs a campaign that doesn’t take six weeks to spin up — this is the shortcut.
ShadowProtect 8.0 Overview & Demo
Arcserve is running an APAC-timed overview and demo of ShadowProtect 8.0 and Hyper-V host-based protection. NZ-friendly hours, real engineers, and the chance to ask the questions you actually care about (licensing edge cases, migration paths from older SPX deployments, etc.).
Register via the Arcserve APAC webinar link, or — easier — drop us a line at Bluechip IT and we’ll send the calendar invite and prep notes directly.
